Beverly Macy: Social Media Gangnam Style

If you don’t know who Psy Park is, you’re living under a rock. He’s the South Korean artist who’s created Gangnam Style, the latest dance creation sweeping the globe. Stop reading NOW and watch his video. It will make you smile.

Psy was interviewed by MTV News after his appearance at the VMAs:

Psy’s viral pop-splosion was so inescapable that Justin Bieber/Carly Rae Jepsen/Wanted manager Scooter Braun — who knows a thing or two about making YouTube singers into mega-stars — signed Psy to his label this week.

I’d like to hear more — he seems intriguing — his answers about his “fame” were thoughtful and interesting. One thing I noticed is that he says he wants to promote Psy the person, not just the video. A natural marketer.

I also participated in two conferences this past week — the USC Silicon Beach conference and the CBS Social Media conference. Both were excellent examples of creative disruption in communication and business and very inspirational. Being a native of Los Angeles, I’m especially glad to see the rise of “Silicon Beach” companies merging the brilliance of Hollywood and the ingenuity of social to create new products and services.

I’ll call it Social Media Gangnam Style. How are Psy and the social wave at Silicon Beach similar? They’re both a little bit unexpected (there’s Silicon Valley and Silicon Alley, but no Silicon Beach, up till now); they’re totally disruptive (social is THE new platform for discovery and audience-building); and they’re FUN (you can’t help but move to the catchy beat of the Gangnam Style video).

So in spite of the ugly news about another video circulating around the planet causing destruction this week, social media and creativity should win the day. Oppa Gangnam Style!

The tablet wars are heating up. Can Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HD take on Apple’s iPad?

With Google’s recent report on the multi-screen revolution, it’s not surprising that so many players want in the game. The iPad has to fend off not just the Kindle Fire, but the Google Nexus 7, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet, among others. Even Toys ‘R’ Us wants a share of the market!

What savvy marketers and retailers realize is that as tablet usage becomes even more widespread, e-commerce will surge, too. According to one report, over half of tablet owners already say they prefer shopping online using their tablets, and they spend over 20 percent more per purchase compared to desktop or laptop users. Is your site ready for the tablet boom?

Catch up on tablets and e-readers in the latest episode of Freshwire’s “60 Seconds of Social Media” below. Plus, we’ll introduce you to an Icelandic company that wants to clean up your cloud storage.

Andy Plesser: Akamai Has New Video Diagnostic Tools to Analytics Offering

AMSTERDAM — Akamai is gearing up to roll out a new suite of analytics in the next few weeks to help media companies analyze video viewing behavior in greater depth.

We caught up with Noreen Hafez, Senior Product Marketing Manager, at the IBC Show in Amsterdam for details.

Already, Akamai relies on its Media Analytics offering to track user behavior and also quality of service for media companies so they can assess and optimize the performance of their broadband video. Later this month or in early October, the company will roll out Viewer Diagnostics that will offer a deep dive into how viewers behave with specific videos, from the devices used to the geographic location to completion rate for different types of ads, Hafez explains in this video interview.

“[Media companies] can automate these reports, help figure out how to market, how to customize content, what their audience is interested in,” she tells us.

Tyler Mahoney: Gen Y, Social Media, and the Powers That Be

When I heard that President Obama was going to answer questions from the unwashed masses on Reddit.com, I could hardly contain my excitement. For the first time in generations, an American president would be coming into the homes of Americans in a public format to chat with, and not just to, us. “Bring on the hot dogs and marshmallows,” I thought, “cause here comes an FDR-style fireside chat.”

The president answered a smattering of popular questions posed by Redditors in this 30-minute Q&A; the session was, to put it lightly, a success. The overwhelming traffic that flooded in crashed Reddit’s servers. After four years in office, Barack’s still got it.

I read through the session as best I could and even cooked up a S’more in my microwave (thus making my bag of marshmallows un-returnable) before realizing that this was, for better or worse, no fireside chat. FDR’s fireside chats, for all their many virtues and nostalgia, were ultimately one-way communications. By directly answering questions from the audience, Obama broke through the fourth wall and involved Americans directly in a conversation.

The fourth wall, for those of you who didn’t inadvertently crash through it by falling out of character and swearing at the audience in your high school’s production of Alice in Wonderland, describes the conventional barrier that separates performers from the audience. It’s not surprising that social media helps ordinary people cross this barrier, but it is exciting to see the Powers That Be choose to engage average Joes. For whatever cynical political calculations that go on behind closed doors about how to appeal to the electorate, the occasional chance to ask a subjective question is welcome. We’ve seen countless examples of how two-way communications add a refreshing texture to national events, whether it’s at the Democratic National Convention this week or last year’s Revolution in Egypt. If the whole world is a stage, social media is an endless supply of tickets.

So if I have box seats to the tragicomic human drama unfolding all around the planet, why don’t I feel good about all of it? I want to love the fact that I can ask the president if he thinks Lebron is better than Michael Jordan (“No” is the right answer). I want to love the fact that I can tell hundreds of people that I’m still scraping marshmallow goo off the walls of my microwave. But I can’t.

Instead, I find myself at a bar with three of my coworkers, unwilling and maybe unable to pry myself away from my iPhone long enough to talk to any of them like they’re Real Human Beings, and I suspect that they feel the same way. I am, at best, ambivalent about being hyperconnected. I can get a blow-by-blow of the EPL’s (English Premier League) transfer deadline day, but that same freedom has made it so I can’t carry on a conversation with the people across the table from me. Have we become, with all due respect to the TV show Arrested Development, technological never-nudes?

Tech writers around the world have extolled the virtues of social media, but I see it as a curse as much as a blessing. Conversations are dying, and social media isn’t helping. Yeah, I’m stoked that I could theoretically ask Obama about how Reinhold Niebuhr helped shape his faith and his political views, but it distresses me to think that this level of ersatz exchange closely resembles how I communicate with my dearest friends. The same social media that brought the president to my stove top cook-off jamboree is the same social media that has pushed my friends — even the ones who live in my same zip code — out of reach.

Frankly, it’s hard to compete with technology that’s designed to be too good to put down. In a grudge match between my willpower and the empires of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, I’m not ashamed to admit that the odds are in their favor. Honestly, how do you compete with thousands of people — who are quite good at their jobs — who want you to use their addictive products? What is a social media addict to do? How can you have a 12-step program for social media if everyone is hooked? It’s likely that a virtue-based solution will need to make way for self-imposed “no use” rules in the name of maintaining a sphere for human interaction. Even though I work in the tech industry and it is literally my job to be connected, perhaps it would be best to set the expectation among my friends and coworkers that I am not to be reached by any means between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. except in the direst emergencies. Many companies have adopted similar rules in the name of promoting a balance between work life and family life; maybe it’s time for individuals to do the same.

How do we find a way forward that lets us enjoy the benefits of social media while maintaining the civility and depth of good ol’ human communication? I, for one, am planning on liquidating the Costco-sized bag of kosher franks left over from Obama’s Reddit session by inviting my buddies over to a smartphone-free barbecue.

‘Vice’ Announces Cat Video Documentary Starring Lil Bub

Sure, you love Maru, but does Maru have struggle? Discounting the ins-and-outs of boxes, the answer is probably no. Lil Bub, on the other hand, is the Internet’s unlikeliest “it” cat.

Born with several genetic mutations, Lil Bub is a “perma-kitten” — a dwarf, in other words — that also has a deformed lower jaw, an elongated body and is toothless. But that hasn’t prevented her from stopping hearts with a series of adorable cat videos.

Scroll For Videos

Media outlets including The Huffington Post and Jezebel, have sung Lil Bub’s praises, but Vice is going one step further.

In a teaser, released on Aug. 31, Vice announced that they’ve been shooting a documentary about the cat called “Lil Bub & Friendz.” It is directed by Vice global editor Andy Capper and will premiere this fall.

The trailer doesn’t reveal much (oh, the suspense), but there’s something interesting, if not inherently cute and heartwarming, about a cat that overcomes her disadvantages to win the Internet.

In an e-mail to HuffPost, producer Juliette Eisner elaborated:

“The film will focus on the ever-growing obsession with cats on the Internet, through the experience of the [Internet Cat Video Festival] with Lil Bub as the ‘protagonist’ of sorts. It will also feature a number of various cat video directors and other individuals who continue to feed the Internet-cat-fire every single day on the web.”

Admit it: you go online when you’ve got an ache or pain, don’t you? Don’t be embarrassed, most of us — in fact, 80 percent of Internet users — look online for health info.

And we’re not just viewing; we’re sharing. Whether it’s posting symptom and treatment stories on PatientsLikeMe or just Tweeting about our allergies, we’re contributing a lot of information, at a time when technology and big data are poised to possibly make significant breakthroughs in medical research.

IBM, for instance, recently teamed with the CDC to help parse patient records to more quickly identify disease outbreaks, while Britain’s NHS is hoping its access to data from 52 million patient records will yield life-saving information.

While much of the medical profession is still trying to navigate the social media minefield for legal and ethical complications, some organizations are lighting the way forward.

The Mayo Clinic gets it, and they have for a while, establishing themselves as the standard-bearer for the fusion of social media and health care.

GOP War On Porn?

Last week, Republicans were warned not to isolate women voters. This week, they’re being warned not to anger porn-watching voters. Especially because Republicans reportedly watch more porn than Democrats.

Eight of the top ten porn-watching states voted Republican in the last presidential election, according to Harvard researcher Ben Edelman. That stat was quoted by Steven Hirsch, co-chaiman of one of the largest porn franchises, Vivid Entertainment, as he warned the GOP Thursday to back off.

This week in Tampa, Republicans added to their platform a call for more “vigorous” enforcement of pornography and obscenity laws. Current federal obscenity law prohibits hardcore pornography on the Internet, hotel/motel TV, cable/satellite TV and in retail shops–which is pretty much everywhere you can get it. However, enforcement is lax because it has hard to determine which porn qualifies as “obscene,” and the porn industry has usually won such battles in court, Hirsch pointed out.

The big-time producer wrote on Vivid’s web site that Republicans “need to catch up with what’s happening in America and the world today,” he said. “Books like ’50 Shades of Grey,’ dozens of popular cable TV shows and the web have made the public more comfortable with portrayals of sex than they ever have been before… Sex is everywhere.”

Which is exactly what Patrick Trueman, president of the conservative organization Morality in Media, is afraid of. “It’s the Viagra problem for guys in their 20s,” Trueman said to HuffPost. He claims young men are now spending “10 to 12 years looking at porn on the Internet and masturbating to it, so when they are getting married, they are dysfunctional sexually because their brain maps are changed.”

In response to Hirsch’s statement to the GOP, Trueman sent the following to Morality in Media supporters Thursday: “Neither Republicans nor Democrats should be taking advice from a man whose business is sexually exploiting young girls for profit” and who produced “such hardcore porn films as ‘Adventures in Babysitting’ and ‘Savanna’s Anal Gang Bang,’” AVN reports.

Regarding girls who watch porn, he said that they are “several times more likely to engage in group sex.” And, also, “56% of divorces now cite Internet pornography as a factor in the breakup,” he added.

What do the presidential candidates have to say on this “hot” topic? Mitt Romney said in 2007 that he would make sure every new computer is sold with a porn-blocking filter that parents can use to make sure their kids aren’t seeing anything X-rated. In his live chat Wednesday on Reddit, President Barack Obama advocated for Internet freedom but did not comment on porn.

Hirsch’s concluding thoughts on the War on Porn? As long as it’s not child pornography, we shouldn’t be worrying about it. “We have so many more important issues in front of us today than worrying about whether someone is breaking laws that probably should never have been written in the first place,” he wrote.

Hirsch is the same producer who, after Prince Henry’s naked incident in Las Vegas this month, offered the royal $10 million to star in a porn film called “The Trouble with Harry.” He has also been an outspoken critic of Los Angeles City’s recent law requiring porn actors to wear condoms on set.

Pandora Finds Its Groove

(Reuters) – Pandora Media Inc reported better-than expected results and raised its outlook on strong quarterly advertising sales.

Shares of the online streaming music service rose 8 percent in after-hours trading. They closed at $10.08 on Wednesday.

Pandora said second-quarter revenue jumped 51 percent to $101.3 million, beating analysts’ expectations of $100.94 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

On a Non-GAAP basis, the company broke even, besting analysts’ expectations of a loss of 3 cents per share.

The Oakland, California company, which is more than 10 years old, is being carefully watched as a new model for radio listening as more people use the Internet to stream music to their cars, home stereos and mobile devices.

Pandora is dipping into its coffers to aggressively build out a local sales force since it largely depends on advertising revenue.

Advertising revenue rose 53 percent.

The company must pay for the rights to play songs, and as more people listen, the more expensive it becomes.

Pandora’s market share of people listening to U.S. radio is at 6 percent and growing — in a crowded field that includes Clear Channel, Sirius XM Radio and Spotify.

The company raised its full-year revenue forecast to a range of $425 million to $432 million from $420 million to $427 million.

GOP Platform Promises ‘Vigorous’ Crackdown On Porn

The GOP platform committee has included a plank in this year’s draft document calling for “vigorous” enforcement of anti-pornography laws.

In a press release Monday from Morality in Media, a faith-based non-profit, President Patrick Trueman, a former anti-porn prosecutor, calls the current distribution of pornography “a violation of current federal law” and lauds Republicans for approving stricter new wording:

The new language replaces previous platform wording, which only opposed child pornography. It will now read, “Current laws on all forms of pornography and obscenity need to be vigorously enforced.” Trueman noted that current federal obscenity laws not only prohibit distribution of hardcore pornography on the Internet but also on hotel/motel TV, on cable/satellite TV, and in retail shops.

In an interview with The Huffington Post’s Jen Bendery, Trueman said youth access to pornography amounted to “a major, major problem,” and even caused males in their twenties to develop “porn-induced sexual dysfunction.”

“It’s the Viagra problem for guys in their 20s,” Trueman said. Young males are now spending “10 to 12 years looking at porn on the Internet and masturbating to it, so when they are getting married, they are dysfunctional sexually because their brain maps are changed. They enjoy what they’ve been doing for 10 to 12 years. Normal sex is not something that gets them excited.”

The broader regulation, submitted by Family Research Council president and Louisiana RNC delegate Tony Perkins, also echoes GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s position on the issue during his previous campaign for the White House.

“I wanna make sure that every new computer sold in this country after I’m president has installed on it a filter to block all pornography and that parents can click that filter to make sure their kids don’t see that kinda stuff coming in on their computer,” Romney said at a campaign stop in Iowa in 2007.

In February, Romney lent support to a similar effort in response to a Morality in Media questionnaire about cracking down on pornographers.

The Daily Caller reported earlier this year that Trueman, who served in the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, had received an assurance from Romney’s campaign that the former Massachusetts governor would “vigorously” prosecute pornographers if elected president.

Remember travel agents? Once a staple of vacation planning, their numbers have dwindled as Internet and social media use has skyrocketed.

Which isn’t to say that travel agencies are down and out; rather, they’re in demand for VIP, specialized travel planning and consultation.

But the rest of us are probably on Expedia and Kayak. The ease with which consumers can now research and purchase online has not only revolutionized the business of travel, but birthed opportunities we couldn’t have dreamed of 20 years ago. Need to find a room in Omaha for a night but don’t want a boring, drab hotel experience? Stay with a local! Or maybe you want to experience New York City and make some real connections? No problem.

Catch up on travel, tourism and the Internet in the latest episode of Freshwire’s “60 Seconds of Social Media.”

And in our newest segment, Venture Stars, where we’ll profile startups we find interesting, we’ll introduce you to Virool, a self-serve video ad placement service, focused primarily on social games, mobile apps and blogs.

Layla Revis: The Future of Film and Social Change

The future of filmmaking and funding is starting to look a little brighter. For the past few years, Hollywood executives who secretly care more about quality and less about the big box office dollar have bemoaned the dissolution of specialty arms like Warner Independent and the consolidation of groups like Paramount Vantage, but thankfully, The Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) is showing its loyalty to indie filmmakers and digital storytelling innovation the old fashioned way… by putting their money where their mouth is. Today, they just announced a partnership with Ford Foundation’s Just Films Initiative, the grant recipients for the 2012 TFI New Media Fund. This diverse assortment of interactive, non-fiction, transmedia projects explores everything from Guatemalan street gangs to rural West Virginia community issues to collaborative problem-solving facilitated by a robot named Laika. The six projects from the U.S. and around the world have been awarded between $50,000 and $100,000 apiece and, in addition to receiving financial support, grantees will also take part in peer-to-peer meetings, as well as a lab to help them develop their projects and build advocacy with audiences, similar to The Sundance Institute’s New Frontier Story Lab.

Why is this unique?

Because The TFI New Media Fund and Ford Foundation’s Just Films project are supporting non-fiction film projects that go beyond traditional screens, exploring storytelling that is interactive, multi-platform and participatory with issues that matter most: social justice and equality.

“We continue to witness the power of storytelling in addressing the most relevant topics of today in unique and experimental forms,” Orlando Bagwell, director of the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms initiative, said. “The opportunities to inform and engage audiences on complex issues are limitless and the variety and diversity of these projects embody the potential to advance social justice.”

This just demonstrates that, for at least one organization, box office blockbusters aren’t going to overshadow the true goal of filmmaking: to tell evocative stories that matter and to contribute to the emerging field of interactive digital storytelling.

From Alma, A Tale of Violence, a moving confession of a former member of one of Guatemala’s most violent gangs, where Alma tells her story in an interactive web/tablet concept in which the viewer moves between two screen levels, a face-to-face experience and a visual evocation of Alma’s recollections to Laika’s Adventure, an ongoing experiential, educational story world that plugs into Connected Sparks, an online social change platform for children, Laika, a traveling robot, facilitates collaborative problem solving among students, teachers, storytellers and a global audience. At its core, Laika’s Adventure looks to harness the power of storytelling, technology and creativity to inspire micro-actions of change.

This evolving mediascape may continue to be under-the-radar and consistently in search of funds, but it could also very well mark the future of film — at home or in the theater. Last year, The TFI New Media Fund was complemented by TFI Interactive, a one-day event held during the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival that brought together speakers from film, journalism, game design, and education to explore this new landscape and discover how different industries and disciplines can cross-fertilize and learn from each other. Another edition of TFI Interactive is planned for the next edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, which runs April 17-28, 2013, so be on the look out.

Belinda Parmar: Social Change Via Social Media: How Modern Campaigners Are Making Noise on the Net

2012-08-03-LG_CAMPAIGNING2.0_PIC.jpg

When I launched Lady Geek in 2010 it was an incredibly daunting prospect. I had a cause that I believed in — making the technology industry more accessible to women — but when it came to getting our voice heard I had to start completely from scratch. Over the last couple years we’ve built up a huge following and been able to make a difference — but only because of our presence on social media. Without it, who knows where we’d be?

Campaigning has been democratised. Over the last few years the Internet has become a bit like Speaker’s Corner — anyone with an opinion can get on a soapbox and have their voice heard. Naturally this means there is a lot of noise to be filtered out, but it has also allowed countless great causes to find an audience and raise awareness across the globe.

Vicky Simister knows exactly how important the Internet is to a new campaign. After being sexually harassed, then assaulted on the street — and finding the police completely unsupportive — Vicky decided to take matters into her own hands. She founded Anti-Street Harassment UK, a campaign giving a voice to women who have experienced harassment. The campaign has succeeded in raising awareness of the issue, gaining significant national coverage.

In the past someone like Vicky would have struggled to make an impact, no matter how worthy the cause. “I’m an accountant by background — I’d never run a campaign before and I didn’t have any training or guidance.” Now, however, she has the tools to make a difference. “It used to be only people that had access to the national press or already had a public profile could make a difference, whereas all I needed was a free WordPress blog and I was able to put my message out there.”

For obvious reason this has cut the costs of running a campaign dramatically. When social entrepreneur and Founder of City&Style Magazine Justice Williams MBE first started recruiting young people for her new enterprise in 2006, she did so by printing flyers and running radio adverts — all of which was very expensive. But when she started her second venture — aspirational magazine Tru Life — she was able to recruit everybody she needed in a six-week window, all via social media.

This has levelled the playing field — now anyone who wants to can get their campaign up and running without having huge funds behind them. For the first time in years we don’t have to rely on traditional inner circles.

Siobhan Benita caused shockwaves earlier this year when she mounted an independent run at the office of London Mayor, finishing fifth — within 0.36 percent of the Lib Dem’s Brian Paddick. Incredibly Siobhan did this without huge party resources behind her.

“I didn’t have hundreds of people dropping leaflets into people’s doors, so getting the social media cracked was really important to me. It’s there, it’s accessible, it’s 24/7. Once you’ve got the kit it’s free. All of that makes it fantastic, it’s got huge potential for reaching out to people.”

Barbara Kasumu is the CEO of Elevation Networks, a company that works tirelessly to help young people become more competitive in the labour market. Barbara believes it’s become impossible to launch a successful campaign without engaging with social media — people simply won’t listen to you. “If you’re not campaigning with social media you’re missing a trick. It’s almost like everyone else is chatting outside and you’re sitting in a room alone in the dark, thinking if I just switch on the light everything will be fine — whereas actually, everyone’s outside.”

The best thing about it, says Justice, is that it opens up channels that would previously have been off-limits: “With social media I get to speak to people that I never would have spoken to before. It’s raised awareness of what we’re doing, it’s attracted interest from other people. A lot of journalists have contacted me that way.”

So what advice should you follow if you want to launch a social-media campaign?

“Do your research,” says Barbara. “Learn as a result of your initial interactions what has been popular. What has been able to go viral and why. And keep things simple — it’s about having a really clear message that everyone can buy into and everyone can retweet.”

For Vicky, it’s the personal nature of social media that really helps push a cause into the public consciousness: “I found it easier to get my story told in the more traditional platforms because I was able to tell my story and make it personal… I gave my name and put my face to it, and that was why other victims approached me.”

However, Justice warns that this personal touch means that keeping a clear head is important at all times. “Think before you tweet. People get quite passionate on Twitter. It is a platform that is all about personal opinions, but sometimes they can be harmful to your campaign — especially if you tweet professionally and personally from the same Twitter account.”

The hope above all, says Siobhan Benita, is that the open platform will encourage new voices to come forward all the time: “I would love more people to come forward into public life — everybody’s got valid experience and we shouldn’t hear from the same people all the time — especially when they’re not doing a very good job.’

One thing’s for sure — it’s never been easier to speak up for something you believe in.

كشفت شركة Acer التايوانية رسمياً عن هاتفيين ذكيين جديدين أطلقت عليهما الاسم الرمزي Liquid Gallant، وLiquid Gallant Duo.
