Google announces 25 billion Play Store downloads, celebrates with many 25 cent apps

In order to commemorate reaching an awesome milestone, Google is discounting multiple paid apps down to 25 cents.  After reaching 25 billion app downloads earlier today, several of the most prominent paid apps are discounted significantly.

Some developers participating in the 25 cent promotion includes Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Rovio, runtastic, and Full Fat.  Some notable 25 cent apps include Ocean HD, Asphalt 7, Tasks, Runtastic Pro, Draw Something, and Angry Birds Space Premium.  There are more titles available for 25 cents, so definitely browse the Play Store.

It is also worth noting that the Play Store is now home to 675,000 apps, which is also impressive in itself.  In addition, Google is in the process of compiling lists of 25 movies you must own, 25 albums that changed the world, 25 banned books, and 25 awesome magazines.  Keep an eye on the Play Store as exciting things will be occurring over the next five days.

Google Play Books updated with new features such as maps, annotations, and dictionary

Google Play Books updated with new features such as maps, annotations, and dictionary

If you have the Google Play Books app downloaded on your Android device, then you will likely notice that it has been updated to a newer version featuring several improvements.  If you enjoy reading on the go using the Google Play Books app, then you will definitely be thankful for the latest feature additions.

To begin, Google allows you to search a location within the Play Books app.  For example, if you are reading a novel that references a specific location, then tapping on the location will bring up Google Maps and the option to search Wikipedia.  In addition, users can now select and pull up definitions for unfamiliar words.

Another great addition to the app is the ability to translate on the go.  Users can simply select words or text that they want translated into another language, and this is powered by Google’s translation service.  The last part of the update has to do with annotations and the ability to highlight text and jot notes in the margins.  The beauty of this feature is that it will sync across all Google Play Book apps installed on devices you may own.

Lastly, there is now support for Japanese text (meaning the app will render the text in the correct orientation), 2D page turning animation, and a sepia reading theme.

Feel free to check out the revamped Google Play Books app using the Play Store link below.

The Tiny Bang Story – Hand-drawn, colorful puzzles to bend and twist your mind [Game Review]

The Tiny Bang Story – Hand-drawn, colorful puzzles to bend and twist your mind [Game Review]

The Tiny Bang Story has been out for PC for a while now, but just got released to the Google Play store a few weeks ago. It’s a great port with a beautiful hand-drawn art style, and Android certainly needs as many of these games as possible. Made by Herocraft, makers of Farm Frenzy and a Top Developer, The Tiny Bang Story is a brain-teasing puzzler and hidden object game. It has all the necessary features like puzzle pieces and mini-games with a very soothing soundtrack and a beautifully drawn world.

In a semi-steampunk world, an asteroid strike has demolished the landscape into puzzle pieces, and it’s your duty to put it all back together. You’ll have to complete five levels with multiple scenes to find all the puzzle pieces and put the world back together. There’s no textual help and very little story beyond what’s in the description of the game so it’s up to you to figure it all out. There are a few places where you may get stumped for a while, but The Tiny Bang Story does a good job of not ever leaving you too stranded.

The gameplay for The Tiny Bang Story is a fairly simple point-and-click adventure. Even the mini-games won’t test your dexterity or speed that much so you can relax and enjoy the game at your leisure. For this reason, The Tiny Bang Story is great for the mobile platform. You can pick it up, find a few puzzles pieces, figure out a brain-teaser, then put it down for a while without losing any progress or having to finish the level. As you begin the game, you’ll come across puzzle pieces scattered throughout the level. Some are easy to spot while others are blended into the background. There are about 25 puzzle pieces in each level, 125 in total, and you have to fit these together at the end of each level to put the world of The Tiny Bang Story back together. The mini-games themselves are really just to help you find all the puzzle pieces.

The brain teasers are an amalgamation of flipping pictures, matching numbers, and turning maps to allow you to open chests or hidden rooms. This doesn’t stray from the norm, but some puzzles will stretch your mind muscles and leave you confused longer than you should be. Even the devilish Venn Diagram puzzles only have so many options; you just have to keep turning until it falls into place. You can also get hints by swatting the bugs on the screen, but I found that takes almost as much time as scouring the screen. The artwork and soundtrack are worth the price of admission alone. While you’re stuck trying to solve the map puzzle, enjoy the serenity of the sounds pestering you with their simplicity.

The only drawback I had for the game was the installation process. It took a few tries and crashed often at the beginning before the game finally took off. I noticed a few of the same remarks in the Play store reviews. After you buy the game, you’ll have to install about 100mb of data which doesn’t finish properly sometimes so you’ll have to start over. Even though the game took me about 4.5 hours, I felt it could have had another planet that you needed to puzzle together. The atmosphere and graphics lend themselves well to extra levels, and I would love to see Herocraft expand this world.

The Tiny Bang Story is a must-play if you’re at all interested in casual or puzzle games. There’s nothing devious about the mind games, but Herocraft has put a great atmosphere, game, soundtrack, and world together which makes The Tiny Bang Story one of the tops in the Puzzle class. You can get the game in the Play store for $2.99.

Google improves Chrome Android browser security with latest update

Google improves Chrome Android browser security with latest update

With mobile devices becoming more and more popular, it is no surprise to see malicious adware and viruses continue to pop-up through apps and web browsing.  The latest update to the Chrome Browser for Android beefs up its security by relying heavily on Android’s sandbox technology.

Mobile threats on your device will be contained through Chrome before affecting other processes on your device.  For users running Android 4.1, there will be a seamless integration of Chrome security to protect your handset.

Other updates include location preferences in Google app’s settings, enhanced YouTube video playback in full screen mode, video continues to play through screenlock/unlock, and third party keyboards (such as SwiftKey 3) received increased support.

Overall, the Chrome update sounds like a nice one, where it offers some new features and improves functionality.  Users can download the updated browser immediately from Google Play.

Google Play works with Boingo to provide free WiFi at 4,000 locations throughout September

Google Play works with Boingo to provide free WiFi at 4,000 locations throughout September

Traveling without a strong data connection (or a capped data connection) can make an already stressful trip even more stressful.  Fortunately, Boingo in collaboration with Google Play is going to help relieve some of that stress during September by offering free WiFi access across its 4,000 plus WiFi hotspots.

Since this is as much a Google Play promotion as it is Boingo, users running Android, PC, or Mac will be able to take advantage of the free WiFi.  As you’ll likely notice, this leaves iPhone and iPad owners out of the mix.  Some of WiFi hotspots include 15 national and popular airports.  In addition, users who take advantage of the WiFi will be eligible to receive free Google Play content.

All in all, it sounds like a great promotion and it will take place starting today and run through the rest of September.

The Tiny Bang Story from Herocraft Released to the Play Store

The Tiny Bang Story from Herocraft Released to the Play Store

Herocraft, the makers of several well-known games, recently released The Tiny Bang Story (TTBS) to the Google Play store. TTBS has a beautiful hand-drawn style to accompany the puzzle/hidden object gameplay. This seems to be a perfect fit for mobile devices, especially devices with an HD display like the Nexus 7. With the casual market only rising, Herocraft has found what it does best and made it better.

Here’s the caption from the Play store where TBBS already has an overwhelming number of five star reviews:

“Welcome to Tiny Planet, a gorgeous steampunk inspired world sadly devastated by a recent asteroid strike. Your mission is to help rebuild this beautiful idyll and restore it to its former glory. To do so you’ll need to hunt hidden objects, solve puzzles and conquer devilish brain teasers.”

The style looks quite a bit like the point-and-click adventure game Machinarium, which was lauded for its graphics.  I’ll be playing through TTBS this week, and I’ll have a review up pretty soon. Check back to find out all the ins-and-outs of the game as well as my full thoughts.

Google Play Store launches end of summer promotion, several big titles participate

Even though Google has yet to officially unveil its latest promotion in the Google Play Store, it appears many major Android App developers have lowered the price on their apps for a limited time.

The End of Summer Sale, which coincides with Labor Day Weekend, is taking place as a search in the Play Store for “****End of Summer Sale” yields 53 results of discounted apps.  I believe the page will soon populate with even more apps as developers begin to discount their apps.

Some of the major titles that are currently discounted at 99 cents include SwiftKey 3 Keyboard, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, N.O.V.A 3 – Near Orbit, and Gangster Rio – City of Saints.  Feel free to browse the search query below to see if any other titles interest you.

Google Now update brings support for public alerts, movie listings, and sport preferences

A recent update to Google Search in the Google Play Store brings several notable changes to the Google Now portion of the app — which is only available to Android 4.1 users.  The functionality of Google Now is already impressive, but the latest update enhances its capabilities across three main areas.

Beginning with movie showtimes, if you search for a movie, a Google Now card will populate with information on the movie such as where it is playing.  In addition, your device can alert you to watch the movie if you are near a theater.  As per the sports update, users can now manually select their favorite sports team and a card will contain the information and continue to update it in real-time.  The last update has to do with public service alerts, which could be critically important if you live in an area susceptible to natural disasters.

Users running Android 4.1 can go ahead and install the update now as it will bring greater functionality to Google Now.

Christina Gagnier: On Day Two of the RNC, Obama Steals the Internet

Hours before the second night of the 2012 Republican National Convention hits primetime, the Obama campaign appears to have orchestrated an impressive play to steal the spotlight from Mitt Romney and the convention: hosting an “AMA” (ask me anything) on Reddit. With a verification photo of himself in tow, appropriately sitting at a Macintosh, President Obama endeavored to answer Redditors questions about the Administration and what ‘s next. Obama also made sure to tweet to his Twitter followers verifying that it was indeed him hosting the question and answer period.

For a campaign that has continued to be ahead of the curve in online organizing, the Reddit AMA again proves the campaign’s adeptness with technology and making a play that gives credit to the platform that was responsible for much of the activism organizing around issues like SOPA (the Stop Online Privacy Act that was cited as an attempt to “turn off the Internet” earlier this year).

Microsoft SkyDrive Android app now available in Play Store

Microsoft SkyDrive Android app now available in Play Store

Just as we expected, the Microsoft SkyDrive app is now available for Android users running Gingerbread and higher.  The app measures in at 3MB and should be a useful app for those that use SkyDrive.

Essentially, it is another Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. competitor, but for those who are committed to SkyDrive, the app will help out immensely.  It offers the same features found in the iOS and Windows Phone versions of the app.  Directly from Microsoft, the app allows users to:

• Access all of your SkyDrive content including files shared with you.

• View recently used documents.

• Choose multiple photos or videos to upload from your phone.

• Share your files and photos – send a link in email or in another app.

• Open your SkyDrive files in other Android apps.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar tipped for release with Verizon, offers Starter mode and Amazon apps

Samsung Galaxy Stellar tipped for release with Verizon, offers Starter mode and Amazon apps

Expected to launch on Verizon in the near future is the Samsung Galaxy Stellar.  This unannounced device recently made an appearance on a Verizon rebate form, and now we are seeing it leaked again on an internal Verizon document.  Unfortunately, we do not have an image to go along with the leak, but we do know some interesting information if the leak turns about to be true.

First, the Galaxy Stellar will cost $99 on a two year contract, implying that it will be a mid-range 4G LTE device that is aimed towards the budget-conscious consumers on Verizon.  In addition, it is said to feature an “easy-to-use Starter mode,” which is probably aimed towards new smartphone owners.  The Pantech Marauder recently launched on Verizon with a Starter mode that was used to aid first time smartphone users with the Android experience.  One of Verizon’s main goals is to get feature phone owners onto smartphones, and in order to achieve this, Verizon wants to offer smartphone-friendly devices.

Lastly, it is said to feature Amazon Apps instead of Google Play Store integration.  This could mean a couple of things: it will come loaded with Amazon appstore and not the Google Play Store, or it comes with both stores, but Samsung and Amazon are pushing the Amazon appstore.

In any event, we will hopefully find out more information regarding the Galaxy Stellar in the next couple of weeks.

Why Is Pirating Still Easier Than Renting?

I’ve been wanting to watch the OG Star Wars trilogy for about three months now, but I don’t have any of the DVDs any more. I don’t want to drop $175 clams on a new box set for something I really feel like watching maybe twice a year, and I don’t have a gosh darn clue where to find one of those DVD vending machines. I do have Netflix Instant, which is pretty rad, but of course all of the legendary blockbusters aren’t on there, just as they’re not on Google Play. Really, the easiest thing to do would be to steal the damn things.

Google officially announces gift cards, coming to RadioShack, Target, and GameStop

Google officially announces gift cards, coming to RadioShack, Target, and GameStop

Gift cards have been expected to launch in the Google Play Store ever since the latest version of the Play Store was revealed to contain an area for redeeming gift card codes.

Today, Google officially announced the information as well as the important details surrounding its terms of use and purchase locations. To begin, the gift cards will be able to purchase Android apps, in-app purchases, movies, music, and books.  Unfortunately, Google will not allow gift cards to be used on app subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, hardware purchases, or accessory purchases.

As mentioned in the title, RadioShack, Target, and GameStop will be among the first partner stores to launch the gift cards.  Interested customers can make a visit to any of these retail stores within the next couple of weeks.  At this time, it appears Google Play gift cards are limited to the U.S. only, but hopefully that changes.  In addition, Walmart.com will begin offering the gift cards later this month for those who wish to purchase one online.

Lastly, the gift cards will be availble in $10, $25, and $50 denominations as detailed by the picture above.  Again, the gift cards will be available for purchase in RadioShack, Target, GameStop, and Walmart.com in the next couple of weeks.

Unlock Verizon GS3 Bootloader using 1-click app method

Unlock Verizon GS3 Bootloader using 1-click app method

If you are looking for an easy and simple way to unlock the bootloader on your Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy S III, then you will be pleased to know an app is now available in the Google Play Store that will perform the deed in just one click.

A couple of days ago, we first reported that several devs were able to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon GS3, but this involved code manipulations on Linux or Mac OS X.  The VZW GS3 EZ-Unlocked (Bootloader) app that recently launched in the Play Store will perform the unlock method assuming your device is already rooted.  After unlocking the bootloader, users can run “non-kexec” AOSP roms.

As always, proceed at your own caution only if you know what you are doing.  Be sure to let us know how the process goes if you choose to use the app method.
